City of El Cerrito - Fairmount/Ashbury Intersection Safety Improvements

Coastland provided engineering design services for this HSIP funded safety improvement project intended to increase multi-modal safety and mobility. Improvements include curb bulb-outs; narrowing and realigning the median on Ashbury Avenue to reduce pedestrian crossing distances; new north-south crosswalk; optimizing northbound and southbound left-turn movements; upgrading traffic signal equipment; signing, striping and pavement markings; bringing all intersection elements into ADA compliance; and storm drain modifications.

Sidewalk improvements, ramps and signal improvements were designed to accommodate future Class II and III bicycle lanes. The project required extensive coordination with Caltrans, nearby schools and utility companies. Coastland assisted the City in administering the Caltrans Utility Certification Process and other Caltrans technical studies. Coastland also assisted the City with public informational meetings and other outreach efforts.
